Let the Good Times Bowl

Troy Trojans and Ohio Bobcats accept invitations

The 2010 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on December 18th when the Troy University Trojans and the Ohio University Bobcats take to the field in the Louisiana Superdome.

Executive Director of the New Orleans Bowl, Billy Ferrante, extended the invitations via speakerphone today after spending the morning working with the Executive Committee to assemble the matchup. “The Sun Belt Conference gave us a lot of exciting football to end the season, and made our choice a tough one. Troy has an exciting, competitive, and enthusiastic history with the New Orleans Bowl, and we always look forward to welcoming the Trojan Nation,” noted Ferrante.

On the final decisions, Bowl Chairman Ron Gardner shared the Bowl’s excitement about MAC representative, Ohio, “When we worked with Conference USA to release UTEP to the New Mexico Bowl, we did so knowing that we had an at-large pool that was demonstrating a lot of enthusiasm about the opportunity for post season play in New Orleans. Ohio was no exception. We are excited to have Coach Solichs Bobcats represent the MAC, and guarantee their trip to New Orleans will make them the envy of their Conference. We look forward to introducing the teams, administration, and fans to one of a kind hospitality that New Orleans is famous for.”

Troy claimed their share of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Saturday following Coach Larry Blakeney’s 160th win, as the Trojans defeated Florida Atlantic University to finish their season with an overall record of 7-5, 5-2 in conference play. Blakeney’s Trojans will return for their third New Orleans Bowl appearance where they are 1-1 against Conference USA opponents.  2010, however, will mark the Mid American Conference’s first appearance in the Bowl when the Ohio Bobcats come to town.

"We are all very excited and are looking forward to returning to New Orleans to represent the Sun Belt Conference in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl," Trojans head coach Larry Blakeney said. "We have talked all season about 'The Drive for Five' and part of that Drive was to give our players and our fans a chance to go back to New Orleans." Troy Director of Athletics Steve Dennis was also on today’s call, "We are very humbled and honored to be going to the New Orleans Bowl. This trip is a reward for our players, coaches, students and fans. Now is the time for the Trojan Nation to rise and purchase their tickets from the Troy Athletics Ticket Office and support our team in New Orleans. The challenge is for Troy to have the best 12th man ever in the New Orleans Bowl."

In his 7th year as Head Coach, Frank Solich’s Ohio Bobcats posted an 8-4 overall record, finishing 2nd in the Eastern Division of the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats will make New Orleans their third bowl appearance since 2007, and the first ever contest between the two teams. Ohio has won two of the past four MAC East Championships, earning berths into the MAC title game in 2006 and 2009.

"We are very pleased for the bowl invitation for Ohio University to join the 2010 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl," said Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, commissioner of the MAC.  "The at large invitation reflects on the competitive nature of our conference and I congratulate Ohio University Head Coach Frank Solich, his coaching staff and the student-athletes for their efforts this year.  I am appreciative of the New Orleans Bowl in reaching out to the MAC to participate in this fine event.  Our student-athletes and fans will have a great experience in New Orleans."

The 10th Anniversary R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will kickoff from the Louisiana Superdome at 8:00 pm CST on ESPN. Tickets are available from the Athletic Departments of the participating teams. Details available at http://www.ohiobobcats.com and http://www.troytrojans.com.
