LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE’S RAGIN’ CAJUNS TO MEET THE SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS IN THE 2011 R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL
The 11th annual R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl matchup will feature the San Diego State Aztecs of the Mountain West Conference and Louisiana-Lafayette’s Ragin’ Cajuns of the Sun Belt Conference on December 17, 2011 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Executive Director Billy Ferrante and Bowl Chairman Ron Gardner were able to extend an invitation to SDSU Sunday night via conference call. “We are thrilled to have two brand new teams, with first-year head coaches coming New Orleans for this year’s game. Both the Aztecs and the Ragin’ Cajuns have played a lot of exciting football this year, and we know both of these teams will continue that momentum for this year’s game,” Gardner noted.
The Cajun’s finished thier with an 8-4 record, and have not attended a bowl game since the 1970 Grantland Rice Bowl in Baton Rouge. “This is a great day for Ragin Cajun football. I am very proud of these players, students and fans that are going to be going to a bowl game for the first time in 41 years,” said first year Head Coach Mark Hudspeth. UL Director of Athletics, Scott Farmer, expressed his excitement and sent a message to the fans of the Ragin’ Cajun nation “We are extremely thrilled to represent the Sun Belt Conference in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Our players and coaches have worked very hard for this honor, and we expect our fans to ‘Paint the Quarter Red’ for the game.”
In his first year as Head Coach, Rocky Long’s Aztecs finished with a regular season record of 8-4 on the year. In 2010, SDSU defeated Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl. This year’s game marks the first time in SDSU’s Division I history that they will attend back-to-back bowl games. “This team is well deserving of the honor of going to a bowl game. We’ve been bowl eligible for almost three weeks now, and there was a lot of talk that we weren’t event going to get a bowl bid. But this team deserves to be in a bowl game and I know our players are excited about it,” Long said.
“I’m just excited for the development of the program,” Jim Sterk, Director of Athletics for SDSU said. “It’s a great reward for the hard work that our coaches, our players and all the support that our fans have given us all year long to be rewarded with this game. I’m excited about this year and the future and what this program is doing and what we have to do yet.”
