SOUTHERN MISS GOLDEN EAGLES SELECTED TO TAKE ON ARKANSAS STATE IN 2005 NEW ORLEANS BOWL.
The New Orleans Bowl Committee formally extended an invitation today to Head Coach Jeff Bowers’, and the University of Southern Mississippi’s, Golden Eagles football team to defend their 2004 New Orleans Bowl Champion title.
The match-up will mark the Golden Eagles second trip to the New Orleans Bowl, and Sun Belt Conference Champion ASU’s first trip to any bowl as an NCAA Division I-A member.
Billy Ferrante, Executive Director of the New Orleans Bowl, extended the invitation by telephone to USM’s Athletic Director, Richard Giannini, “Ever Since USM became bowl eligible with their win against Tulane, their enthusiasm about returning to the New Orleans Bowl has been outstanding. My conversations early on with Giannini confirmed our thinking that the Golden Eagles players and fans would be looking for an opportunity to take advantage of Lafayette’s proximity and hospitality, and especially the Bowl’s new date, which last year fell during USM’s exam schedule.”
Southern Miss had nine players selected All-Conference USA in their 2005 season (6-5), five on the first team, four on the second team and one on the third, as well as Kevis Coley being named Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Year. The Golden Eagles also had an All-Freshman selection, in tight end Shawn Nelson. The 10 selections mark the most for Southern Miss since it had 15 selections in 2003. Seven Golden Eagles earned Conference USA honors last season. USM and ASU last played in 1980, with Southern Miss leading the all-time series 6-2.
The 2005 New Orleans Bowl will be played Tuesday, December 20th, at Cajun Field, in Lafayette Louisiana. The game was moved from New Orleans due to damages incurred by Hurricane Katrina on the Louisiana Superdome. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm CST, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN.
