ASU INDIANS TO REPRESENT SUNBELT
Nov 29, 2005
Author: Joffray
Members of the New Orleans Bowl Committee formally extended an invitation to Head Coach Steve Roberts and the Arkansas State University Indians to represent the Sun Belt Conference in the 2005 New Orleans Bowl. Jay Cicero, President/CEO of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, and Wright Waters, Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, made the invitation in Jonesboro, Tuesday evening.
The Indians earned the official title of Conference Tri-Champion by beating North Texas, in Denton, in their last game of the regular season, and posting a 5-2 conference record. By virtue of their previous head-to-head win against UL-Lafayette, ASU received the invitation to represent the Conference in the Bowl. The bowl game will be Arkansas State's first postseason appearance since 1987, when it reached the Division I-AA quarterfinals. This marks the first time ASU will participate in a bowl game as an NCAA Division I-A member.
ASU’s opponent, a representative from Conference USA is expected to be announced within the week. C-USA finished their regular season play with six bowl eligible teams, and will host their Conference Championship game this weekend. The inaugural Conference USA Football Championship Game will feature West Division champion Tulsa at East Division champion UCF on Saturday, at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
Tickets for the 2005 New Orleans Bowl are officially on sale, and can be purchased from the ASU Ticket Office by calling 870-972-2781. Discounted tickets are available to students with a valid ASU ID, courtesy of the Indian Club. Students may order tickets at the ASU Box Office in the Convocation Center by presenting a valid ASU ID when purchasing. In addition, students are required to show a valid ASU ID and a game ticket for admission to the bowl game.
The 2005 New Orleans Bowl will be played Tuesday, December 20th, at Cajun Field, in Lafayette Louisiana. The game was moved from New Orleans due to damages incurred by Hurricane Katrina on the Louisiana Superdome. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm CST, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN.
