North Texas Practice Notes: Sunday 12/12

The Mean Green took some time after practice to brighten the day for the kids of the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.

Handing out autographed footballs at every door, head coach Darrell Dickey and his players spent some time with kids and helped to bring a smile to New Orleans’ newest Mean Green fans.

“Giving something back to these kids is great. Some of these guys haven’t smiled in a while, so we will do anything we can to help change that,” said quarterback Scott Hall.

While the kids get a much needed pick me up, the players said they get even more from it than the children. This is the fourth trip to the Big Easy for senior punter Brad Kadlubar, and he said this is one of his favorite moments of the bowl.

“It’s a humbling experience to spend some time with these kids. Sometimes we take it for granted that we play college football,” Kadlubar said. “I really enjoy bringing a smile to these kids face. For me, this is one of the best experiences of the whole trip.”

During today’s two hour practice, North Texas focused on the final preparations for Tuesday’s game against Southern Mississippi.

The Mean Green defense looked sharp in the two minute drill as sophomore safety Allan Harrison ended two drives with interceptions.

“I think we have a focused football team that is ready for Tuesday’s game,” Dickey said.

The Mean Green will have one final walk through practice in the Superdome on Monday afternoon before taking on the Golden Eagles in the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl.

Bower Pleased With Practice For Wyndham New Orleans Bowl

NEW ORLEANS, La.— The Southern Miss football team continued its preparations its bowl game with North Texas in Tuesday’s Wyndham New Orleans Bowl, with a two-hour practice at the Barney Mintz Practice Field, today, at Tulane’s on-campus practice facility.

The team has done other things besides practice. Saturday night, the team went and enjoyed several hours at Six Flags, and several players visited the New Orleans Children hospital today.

The Golden Eagles will attend the Coaches Award Luncheon on Monday afternoon before going through a final practice at the Superdome in the late afternoon.

Head Football Coach Jeff Bower said the focus of the week is on North Texas, a team he says the team has a lot of respect for.

“They’ve won four-straight Conference Championships,” Bower said. ”They’re familiar with the New Orleans Bowl. They’ve been here three-straight years. They’ve also won seven-consecutive games, so we have a lot of respect for them.”

Bower said the team will need to play with a lot of passion to win the game.

“We’ve got to play hard,” Bower said. “We found out that we’re not real good when we don’t play with some emotion. We need to be excited about playing. This football team needs a win to close out our year. It’s critical that we do all we’ve got to do to play well enough to win this game.”

Southern Miss (6-5) will close out its 2004 season in the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl, facing the University of North Texas (7-4) on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 6:30 p.m., at the Louisiana Superdome (69,767). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Tickets are for premium reserved seats and for students. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-800-TICK or 601 266-5418 or visiting SouthernMiss.com.
