Golden Eagles Continue Wyndham New Orleans Bowl Preparations
HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The Southern Miss football team continued preparations for the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl today, with a two-hour practice at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The Wyndham New Orleans Bowl is the first bowl of the year, as the Golden Eagles meet North Texas in a Dec. 14 game in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
Head Football Coach Jeff Bower said North Texas is a good football team.
"They don't beat themselves," Bower said. "They're going to line-up and run the ball about 70 percent of the time, compared to only 20 passes a game. They can really run the football."
Southern Miss closed out its regular season on Dec. 4 against Cal, due to the game being moved from Sept. 16 as a result of Hurricane Ivan. The team doesn't have extra-time to prepare for a bowl game last year, a span of nine days, compared to 31 last year, as the team ended its regular season Nov. 29 against East Carolina, before playing in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31.
"It's been a whirlwind for us as coaches, with recruiting and preparation, and our players with exams," Bower said. "There's been a lot going on. We haven't experienced a bowl preparation like this. We're excited about being in a bowl game, with another chance to play."
Bower said senior tight end Otho Graves (ankle) practiced "a little" today, and added that he "doesn't know the game status" of sophomore defensive end Matthew Chatelain (ankle) and senior linebacker Dillon Cleckler (knee).
Bower added that the he applied for a waiver to the NCAA to allow more coaches on the road to recruit. Only seven coaches are allowed to be on the road. Bower said he wants all 10 coaches to be on the road next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, "so we can catch up."
