Officials from the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl announced an invitation and acceptance to appear in the 2004 Wyndham New Orleans Bowl to the University of Southern Mississippi. Coming off a 26-21 win against the UAB Blazers on Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium, Southern Miss became bowl eligible with a 6-4 record.

Announcing the Conference USA representative, Wyndham New Orleans Bowl Executive Director, Ron Maestri, commented. "This is the kind of match up our Bowl has been excited about since we formed it 4 years ago. The regional draw that Southern Miss brings to the table and their level of competition are both very valuable for the game. When you look at the strength of New Orleans and Louisiana talent on their roster, the local Golden Eagle alumni and fan base, as well as the convenience of travel, local attendance and regional interest for this year's game should be at an all time high. I'm certain that Southern Miss is as excited to play in the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl as we are to be hosting them."

Richard Gianni, Southern Miss Director of Athletics, echoed Meastri's sentiments, "We're excited to be participating in a bowl game for the seventh time in the past eight seasons. Golden Eagle fans enjoy the city of New Orleans, and they will enjoy our first-ever appearance in this outstanding bowl game. The close proximity to New Orleans gives our fans another chance to come support the football team and we're looking forward to it."

The Golden Eagles will take on the Sun Belt Conference Champion, Mean Green of University of North Texas Mean Green, on December 14th in the Louisiana Superdome at 6:30 p.m. The game will broadcast live on ESPN, as the first game of the college bowl season. The two teams are tied at 3-3 in previous meetings, with Southern Miss winning the last match up, in 1981, 22-0. The two teams have a more recent history as well: Administrative Staff. As recently as 4 years ago, Current UNT Athlectic Director Rick Villareal served as the Associate Athletic Director at Southern Miss, as did many of his staff that made the move to North Texas with him.
