BID TO NEW ORLEANS BOWL

Head Coach Tommy West and his University of Memphis Tigers accepted an invitation today to play in the 3rd Annual New Orleans Bowl, Tuesday December 16th. The 8-4 Tigers, finished tied for 3rd place in Conference USA with a 5-3 conference record.

When the Tigers take on the University of North Texas Mean Green in the Louisiana Superdome, they will be led by New Orleans native and former J.T.Curtis quarterback Danny Wimprine. As a Junior QB, Wimprine has surpassed virtually every passing and total offense record for the University of Memphis.

As a three-year starter at J.T. Curtis High School in New Orleans, Wimprine led J.T. Curtis to back-to-back Louisiana State championships in football. Over his four year career, Curtis had an overall record of 53-2. At Quarterback, Danny led team to the 1999 state title, rushed for 567 yards and 11 touchdowns in 1999, and passed for 500 yards and four scores. Wimprine was named to the New Orleans Times Picayune Top Prospect List for 1999 and was listed among Dandy Don’s Top Prospects in Louisiana. As a junior, he led his team to the state title and rushed for over 900 yards..

This year’s New Orleans Bowl will also serve as a homecoming for 4 other area natives currently on the Memphis Roster.

Sophomore Tight End John Doucette received All-America and all-state honors while attending St. Augustine, and was named to SuperPrep Football Magazine’s All-Region Team for 2001.

Junior Running Back Derron Parquet set the Catholic League record for rushing as a senior with 2,211 yards on 303 attempts and scored 25 touchdowns while playing for Coach Ray Roth at Rummel High School, and transferred to Memphis from LSU in 2002.

Freshman Mike Snyder made the Memphis roster as a linebacker in 2003 after lettering for 3 years at John T. Curtis High School, where he was named to the Louisiana All-State Team.

Sophomore Defensive End LaVale Washington lettered as a true Freshman in 2002, after playing lineman for St. Augustine with current Memphis teammate John Doucette.

The 3rd Annual New Orleans Bowl will mark the Tigers’ first bowl appearance since their win against San Jose State in the 1971 Pasadena Bowl, when they participated as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.
