Conf USA
---CUSA Welcomes USF
Conference USA welcomes the University of South Florida, a charter
member of the league in all other sports, as a football-playing member
this fall. The
addition of USF gives the league 11 football schools for the upcoming
season. USF began football at the I-AA level in 1997. The Bulls played
the past two seasons as a I-A independent, posting the best record among
independents in each of those seasons, including a 9-2 mark last year.
Sun Belt
---Football to Grow
In addition to welcoming Utah State to football this year, the Sun Belt
Conference's football membership will increase to nine in 2004 with the
addition of Troy State University. The Trojans, along with Idaho and
Utah State, will join the league in all sports by the 2005-06 season.
The number of full-time members will increase from 11 to 14.
---Pre-Season Polls pick North Texas
The Sun Belt Conference announced the 2003 preseason poll and
all-conference team at Football Media Days in New Orleans. All-America
candidate Brandon Kennedy, a senior defensive tackle from North Texas,
was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year honors, while
teammate Patrick Cobbs, a junior running back, was named the Offensive
Player of the Year going into the season.
