Fort Collins, Colo./Dec. 6, 2001 - Colorado State University football
coach Sonny Lubick put his team through a 90-minute workout Thursday,
the team's fourth practice in preparation for the team's Dec. 18 New
Orleans Bowl game with North Texas.
"I've been out of town all week, as has our staff, on recruiting
visits," said Lubick following the workout. "We got back in town and
got ready for practice. It was good to get back out there, and we'll do
a little more each day."
The Rams opened bowl preparations last weekend with three workouts,
then returned to the field Thursday. Colorado State will workout again
Friday (3:30 p.m.), Saturday (1:30 p.m.) and Sunday (11:30 a.m.),
followed by a break Monday, the day final fall semester examinations
begin on the Colorado State campus. The team is then back at work
Tuesday through Thursday before departing for New Orleans on Friday,
Dec. 14.
The Rams will have held 10 workouts in Fort Collins prior to departing
Dec. 14 for New Orleans, where the team will practice twice at Tulane
University, then hold a short workout the day before the game at the
Louisiana Superdome, site of the first-ever New Orleans Bowl.
"That should give us a pretty good chance to prepare," said Lubick.
"We want to do most of the work here, then polish it up as we get closer
to the game."
Colorado State, 6-5 overall, finished 5-2 in the Mountain West
Conference, in second place behind conference champion Brigham Young.
Lubick said his players are enthused about the school's third
consecutive bowl trip - a school first - and sixth bowl games in nine
seasons.
"Our players are very excited. They worked very hard all season long.
I am very proud of how hard, particularly the seniors, worked all
season," he said.
The Rams gained bowl eligibility by winning four of the team's final
five games, losing only to BYU, which is currently ranked among the top
10 teams nationally. Colorado State accepted the invitation Nov. 28 to
face North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl.
North Texas earned a spot opposite the Rams by winning the Sun Belt
Conference, including five straight wins at the end of the season.
