MOSCOW, Idaho -- North Texas put up a 36-point second half outburst to blow past Idaho, 50-27, here Saturday night to clinch a share of the Sun Belt Conference championship and earn the league's berth in the inaugural New Orleans Bowl.

The Mean Green (5-5 overall, 5-1 Sun Belt) tied Middle Tennessee for the Sun Belt championship, but North Texas' 24-21 win against Middle Tennessee gave the Mean Green the advantage for the New Orleans Bowl berth. Middle Tennessee (8-3, 5-1) completed its regular season with a 38-14 win against Connecticut, and as a bowl-eligible team, awaits a possible at-large berth in another bowl.

North Texas will return to a bowl game for the first time in 42 years, the longest bowl drought by a Division I-A team, after playing in the 1959 Sun Bowl.

The Mean Green, trailing 19-14 at the half, converted three Idaho fumbles in the third quarter into 16 points. Idaho had totaled 336 yards of offense in the first half alone before the opportunistic North Texas defense took advantage in the second half.

Mean Green running back Patrick Cobbs, a true freshman, entered the game after starter Kevin Galbreath was limited by a sore knee and responded with a career-high 111 yards on 20 carries.
